South Dakotans love their pickup trucks. We use them for work, for play, and for everyday life. We rely on them to deliver the goods, whether it is bringing the harvest to market or completing the next backyard project. When it comes to capability and capacity, nothing beats a 2025 GMC Sierra 1500. Recently, the GM Authority website took a deep dive into the payload ratings and capabilities of the 2025 Sierra 1500 as a way for you to see how much these trucks can haul.

The payload rating actually starts with the driveline. There are four engines to choose from. The TurboMax 2.7-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder is rated for 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. As the only four-cylinder engine available for the full-size pickup, you will be surprised by the way it pulls. There are two V-8 engines available—more than any pickup truck in its size class. The 5.3-liter V-8 has 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.2-liter V-8 delivers 420 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The 2025 Sierra 1500 can be ordered with the hard-working Duramax 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder diesel engine. It puts down 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque, while achieving up to 29 mpg on the highway.

You also need to decide whether to go with two- or four-wheel drive. In South Dakota, we recommend four-wheel drive because of our climate, road conditions, and our high propensity towards off-highway use—including farmland.

Payload ratings are also determined by the configuration of the pickup truck. The 2025 Sierra 1500 is offered in three cab types—Regular, Double, and Crew—along with three bed lengths.

Once you identify the driveline and configuration of your 2025 Sierra 1500, you can find the maximum payload rating. Below is a listing of payload ratings for the 2025 Sierra 1500.
