At The Peak of Luxury: The GMC Denali at 25

For the past 25 years, the name Denali has stood for the ultimate in professional-grade luxury. It became GMC’s calling card to attract high-end consumers to its vehicles, when they had never considered one before. The name alone inspired this movement toward creating the luxury GMC lineup. Located in Alaska, Denali is the highest mountain peak in the U.S.A. That inspiration motivated General Motors to find a way to distinguish GMC from all other SUVs in the market.
Today, more than two million Denali models have been sold, all standing at the peak of luxury and capability. As The Robb Report states, the Denali trim level did more than just add more luxury to GMC’s SUVs and pickup trucks. It saved the brand entirely and changed the way we look at luxury SUVs.

The Denali name first appeared on the 1999 Yukon. At that time, our largest SUV was ripe for an upgrade. The Robb Report tells the story: “The final decade of the 20th Century was the beginning of the SUV boom, with automakers across the spectrum expanding their lineups to include machines that blended the height and four-wheel-drive capability of pickups with the roomy cabins and comfortable rides of conventional cars. And as mainstream brands’ showrooms filled up, luxury buyers started to covet high-riding daily drivers of their own — an opportunity that automakers, who smelled profits in the breeze, were all too happy to capitalize on by upfitting and rebadging their existing SUVs for their premium brands.”

That was when GMC turned the spacious and capable 1999 Yukon into the luxurious and comfortable Denali. GMC distinguished the Denali from other Yukons with its own distinct grille and front end, along with chromed finished wheels. Then, they added luxury features inside, such as heated front and second-row seats, higher-end wood trim, and higher-quality leather upholstery. To top it all off, GMC added a Bose audio system that piped excellent sound throughout the Yukon Denali’s cabin.
That was just the beginning. Every generation of the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL Denali since set the standard for luxury SUVs. Each one raising the bar in terms of luxury appointments, performance, and capability. The Denali name and formula spread throughout the entire lineup. Today, almost every GMC SUV and pickup truck – including the Sierra EV – has a Denali trim level. A few models offer the next-level Denali Ultimate trim, with a higher level of standard features, technology, and luxury.
Which brings us to what The Robb Report concludes in their look back at the Denali trim: “And as with any mountain … where was there to go but up?”
