Winter driving is a time when accidents can seemingly happen out of nowhere. If the ground is cold, that means snow and ice are likely to stick more easily. This means that, as a driver, you need to pay extra attention not only to what your vehicle is doing but also to the other vehicles around you. Here are some helpful tips to help you get to and from your destination safely during the winter.

Tip 1

The number one tip for any sort of winter driving is to have a tire that is rated for winter weather. A snow or winter tire is preferred, but there are plenty of all-season tire options available now that can handle temperatures below freezing and multiple inches of snow. If you need new tires, Sharp Automotive has the exact set your vehicle requires.

Tip 2

While it’s nice to get where you’re going in record-breaking time, getting there in one piece is most important. And during inclement weather, slowing down and taking your time can be the best advice you’ll ever get. When there’s snow on the ground, there will be less traction. And while you can still drive, especially if it’s powdery, it’s extremely slippery. Once it melts, it will turn to ice very quickly at 32 degrees.

Tip 3

Keep in mind: apply the accelerator only when the front wheels are straight, and you are going in a straight line. Don’t jab or stab the pedal; instead, press it gradually and linearly; this will help your wheels find traction faster. If you start to spin, turn the wheel in the direction of the slide. Meaning, if your rear starts to go right, turn right. Turn into a slide.

Tip 4

When braking, again, always attempt to stop in a straight line, and evenly add pressure to the pedal as much as you can. Always keep a safe distance between you and the vehicles ahead.

Tip 5

Always plan ahead. Have an emergency kit in your vehicle with either road flares or an LED triangle to put down behind your vehicle if you break down. Make sure to have some gloves, fresh water, a blanket, a tire inflator, a battery jumper, or jumper cables, at the very least. Ensure that you’re leaving with enough time to make it to your destination with time to spare. If you’re going to work, it could take you an hour or longer in inclement weather.
