​​Is The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 the Best Off-Road Pickup Truck Today?​ 

The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a master of all things off-road. From its powerful TurboMax engine, formidable four-wheel-drive system, and Multimatic DSSV dampers, it is built to tackle anything in its path.  

To test its worth, MotorTrend had one for a year to see whether it is the best off-road pickup truck around. They put 50,000 miles on their 2024 Colorado ZR2. A good number of those miles were achieved away from the highway.  

What makes the Colorado ZR2 tick has already been mentioned above. The 310-horsepower 2.7-liter TurboMax engine puts down 430 pound-feet of torque. That represents a lot of low-end power needed to tackle demanding terrain. Sending that power to all four wheels is a selectable four-wheel-drive system that can also be customized via several drive modes. That includes Off-Road, Terrain, and Baja modes – all of which are preset to send torque and traction where it is needed.  

Keeping the Colorado ZR2 level is the Multimatic DSSV dampers that absorb the surface below. As MotorTrend observed, this suspension setup will “accomplish the same task without any electronics and work wonderfully and reliably across the wide variety of terrains we tested in.” 

Combined with all-terrain tires mounted on 17-inch alloy wheels, this off-road pickup truck puts down serious grip. MotorTrend adds that “from an analytical perspective, the Colorado ZR2 excels at rock crawling and is one of the best in the business when it comes to spirited runs in the dirt.” 

The Colorado ZR2 is more than just what’s mounted on the frame. It comes well-equipped with the right amount of technology that keeps it moving. The 11.3-inch center touchscreen display houses up to 10 camera views. One of those views shows you what’s underneath the pickup truck. This comes in handy when negotiating a rugged trail with hazards jutting up from it, or measuring how to articulate a deeply rutted trail.  

It’s not all about exploring the rough country. Inside the Colorado ZR2 is a comfortable cabin that makes traversing trails a relaxed experience. The center touchscreen helps keep you informed and entertained with Google Built-in apps. Google Assistant listens through natural voice recognition for both vehicle and in-vehicle apps. You can add music from the Google Play Store and set a course in Google Maps. There is no need to tether a phone to use this onboard technology. 

MotorTrend concluded their year-long time with the Colorado ZR2 with this to say: “After more than 50,000 miles, I argue that from a dollars-per-unit-of-performance standpoint, the Colorado ZR2 is the best midsize off-road pickup truck you can spend money on. I know it’s where I’d spend mine.”
