New Toyota Land Cruiser Is the Best SUV According to Cars.com

The Land Cruiser is about as iconic as Santa Claus. But in lieu of presents, the Toyota will make sure you make it up, around, over, and through pretty much any terrain or weather the world can throw at you. Some of the first vehicles to explore uninhabitable areas around the globe were different Land Cruiser models, which makes it all the more fitting that Cars.com has named the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser as its Best SUV of 2025.

Engine, Power, and Fuel Economy
For 2025, the all-new Toyota is available in two trim levels, the Land Cruiser and the 1958. Both models are powered by i-FORCE MAX 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrids that produce 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The EPA estimates that both trim levels will achieve 22 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city, with 25 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg combined. The Land Cruiser can tow up to 6,000 pounds when properly equipped.

What Made Cars.com Choose the Land Cruiser as its Best SUV of 2025?
“What it can do is conquer off-road obstacles with ease, with standard locking center and rear differentials, Toyota’s Crawl Control off-road cruise control, full-time four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. The uplevel trim adds a stabilizer bar disconnect mechanism, Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system for specific surface conditions and the Multi-Terrain Monitor camera system to improve visibility while traversing tricky obstacles. The intuitive control layout in the Land Cruiser’s cockpit makes accessing all those features a breeze, too.”
Differences Between the Two Trim Levels
So, what sets the two trim levels apart? The first Land Cruiser debuted in America in 1958, so that trim level pays homage to the original by featuring retro-style round LED headlights, heated fabric seats, and a special Toyota heritage grille. The Land Cruiser 1958 comes standard with a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and a six-speaker sound system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard. The Land Cruiser is meant to be the more luxurious trim and features rectangular LED headlights, heated and ventilated SofTex lined power front seats, dual 12.3-inch screens, and a ten-speaker audio system. Both models get a total of five USB-C ports throughout the vehicle.

The 1958
While both trim levels are extremely capable, there are some subtle differences. The Land Cruiser 1958 comes with locking center and rear differentials, coil springs in the rear, a two-speed transfer case, all-time four-wheel drive, CRAWL control, a 2,400-watt AC inverter, a trailer brake controller, and new integrated liftgate lights that shine on your cargo when the tailgate is open.

The Land Cruiser
The non-1958 Land Cruiser includes Rigid color selectable LED fog lights, a Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism (SDM), Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), and a Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM). Adding the Premium Package gives buyers heated and ventilated power memory leather seats with lumbar support, a 14-speaker JBL premium sound system, digital rearview mirror, Head-Up Display (HUD), power moonroof, a cooling box in the center console, illuminated entry, and two extra USB-C ports in the rear cargo area.
Cars.com Loves that the Land Cruiser Is Versatile
“What the Land Cruiser doesn’t do is punish you for choosing capability. Its standard tires are just street-oriented enough to remain relatively quiet on the highway; the coil-spring suspension that eats up rocks and ridges is just as happy with a diet of potholes and speed bumps; the cabin is roomy and comfortable; and the standard 326-horsepower i-Force Max hybrid powertrain is powerful enough to tow up to 6,000 pounds and efficient enough to achieve an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined. And that’s with more torque — 465 pounds-feet — than the previous-generation Land Cruiser’s standard V-8 engine. The Land Cruiser will get you to and from the trail in relatively efficient comfort, and in between, it’ll handle most anything you can throw at it.”

Top Notch Safety Features as Standard
Both Land Cruiser models come standard with the best safety features thanks to Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Proactive Driving Assist. Buyers can also option more safety features, such as the available Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Hill Start Assist Control (HAC).
