Testing the Cargo Space of a Toyota 4Runner Hybrid

In its tests, like the one with the new 4Runner Hybrid, the editors help customers know before they buy.  

Cargo Capacity of Different 4Runner Models 

In this test, Edmunds checked out the cargo capacity of the 4Runner Hybrid and compared it to the non-hybrid model it had previously tested. Hybrid models have a little bit of a lip in the rear cargo area that amounts to a 5.5-inch hitgher floor. This gives the hybrid 42.6 cubic feet of max cargo compared to the non-hybrid’s 48.4 cubic feet. The latest 4Runner SR5 and turbo Limited trim levels can also be optioned with third-row seats. The site only tested the two-row model. 

What Size Bags Were Used? 

When it comes to the bags used in Edmunds’ testing, the writers put a lot of thought into making sure they include every type of bag that you may carry in your vehicle. These are the ones they use in their testing: “There are two bags you’d definitely have to check at the airport: Big Gray (26 inches long x 16.5 inches wide x 12 inches deep) and Big Blue (26 x 16.5 x 10). There are three roll-aboards that usually fit as carry-on: Medium Tall (24 x 14 x 9), Medium Wide (23 x 15 x 9) and the smaller Green Bag (21 x 14 x 9.5). Finally, there’s everyone’s favorite Fancy Bag (21 x 12 x 11), a medium-size duffle.” 

How’d the 4Runner Do? 

So how did the 4Runner Hybrid handle all the luggage that easily fit in the two-row non-hybrid model? Easy peasy. The 4Runner Hybrid was able to fit all the luggage, plus a 38-quart cooler, a classic-style duffel bag, and a fancier large duffle bag. While the non-hybrid carries a bit more, the hybrid model easily carries much of the same stuff.
