Motor1.com, a significant automotive publication, recently praised the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, awarding the mid-size its coveted Best Truck designation for 2024. While the ZR2 has been out for a while now, the Bison is a more recent introduction, bringing beefier off-road capability and a more aggressive look. Here’s what made the truck so popular with critics.

Design

Chevy worked with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) to create the ZR2 Bison, which it says offers a best-in-class and record 12.2 inches of ground clearance. It has a class-leading breakover angle and underbody protection that includes five boron steel skid plates. The truck also rides on 35-inch OD mud-terrain tires.

That off-road capability comes with the features that made the Colorado popular to begin with, including a strong turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a useful bed with a tailgate that can support up to 500 pounds, and more. The Colorado is available in a crew cab configuration with seating for five, and it offers what is easily one of the best ride qualities in its class.

Powertrain

The Colorado was once offered with a V6 and a diesel option, but powertrains have been thinned with the latest updates. All models come with a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine making 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive in the ZR2 Bison. While some may mourn the loss of the other engine options, the four-cylinder’s massive torque gives the Bison the ability to climb into and out of trouble without breaking a sweat.

Technology

Chevy equips an 11.3-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and more, and the Bison gets upgraded features for off-roading, including an underbody camera system. An 11.0-inch configurable digital gauge cluster is also standard and can show information like audio playlists and vehicle performance specs.

The Colorado also gets a load of standard safety features, making it one of the better-equipped trucks in its class. Forward collision alerts, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warnings, following distance indicators, and automatic high beams come standard. Buyers can add blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, and other features.
