The Differences Between Options and Accessories

February 1st, 2026 by

When buying a new or used vehicle, you can add options or accessories, but what is the difference? Isn’t adding an accessory an optional extra? It can be, yes. But there is a distinct difference between the two. Allow us to explain.

What Is the Difference?

The main difference is that options are features the automaker installs in or on the car from the factory, while accessories are typically dealer-added options. For instance, if you purchase a bike rack for your GMC Acadia, it will be sold to you by Sharp Automotive and can either be attached by someone at the dealership or by you.

Specific Options

Options are more specific, such as an optional sound system upgrade or choosing leather over cloth seating surfaces. Options can also refer to different types of wheels installed on the vehicle during production. Adding wheels yourself after the fact is an optional accessory.

Accessory Items

Accessory items can either be bought during the initial purchase of the vehicle or at any time after. When buying extra items at the time of purchase, you can often roll them into the vehicle’s overall price and add them to your total amount financed. Or, you can opt to buy things without adding them to the total cost.

Accessories Can Be Purchased Later

Buyers can choose options they want for their car, truck, or SUV as either a standalone extra or as part of a package. When building a vehicle on the Build and Price sections of the websites for Chevy, GMC, or Toyota, you’ll see a tab for Options, as well as an area listing available Accessories, such as convenience products like a first-aid kit.

Options Can Change Each Year

Sometimes, car companies can change standalone and packaged options each year depending on what customers choose more or less of. For instance, sometimes a technology package adds more equipment. However, the following year, buyers may be able to choose individual tech features that were once bundled. Automakers are always trying to help customers get the most features and options for their money.
