The Glorious Lineup Of The Family-Friendly GMC Sierra HD

The GMC Sierra 1500 appeals to those who want a family truck that can easily accommodate weekend projects while towing a boat, camper, or toybox, and so on. You will also find plenty of Sierra 1500s in fleets and on job sites nationwide, as there is no question the Sierra 1500 can work hard. However, when you need your truck to work really, really hard, Sharp Automotive suggests you consider a move up to a 2500HD or even 3500HD model.

If you think of the Sierra 1500 as a guy who works out regularly, the 2500HD practically lives at the gym. Everything is strengthened, starting with the frame and moving on to suspension components and, of course, the drivetrain. The 3500HD takes it all a step further. It is the guy pictured in the marketing materials for the gym equipment.

The Sierra 1500 has several engine choices: 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four, 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s, and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six. The two HD model lines go big. The lowest-powered choice is a 6.6-liter gas-powered V-8 producing 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. The higher-powered option is a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8 producing 470 horsepower and 975 peak lb-ft of torque at a low 1,600 rpm. Both engines manage their power with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.

The most often cited reason for upgrading to a Sierra HD is the need for greater towing capacity. With the gas V-8, most Sierra 2500HD configurations can tow about 16,000 pounds with a ball hitch and between 18,000 and 18,700 pounds with a 5th-wheel or gooseneck trailer.

Thanks to its stump-pulling 975 lb-ft of torque, a Sierra 2500HD with the Duramax turbodiesel raises the towing capacity to approximately 18,500 pounds with a ball hitch for most configurations and up to 20,000 pounds on some. The figure goes as high as 22,390 pounds with a 5th-wheel or gooseneck trailer.

With the Duramax turbodiesel, just about all 3500HD configurations tow 20,000 pounds through a ball hitch, and with a 5th-wheel or gooseneck, the figure can go as high as 36,000 pounds. Think of one of those long fully loaded livestock trailers or a heavy flatbed carrying a major piece of construction equipment. With trucks like these, you never have to second guess their capability. They have it covered.

Once you have the necessary capability, you can focus on how nice you want the cabin to be. Once fairly utilitarian, the HD model line now has a wide range of accommodations. It starts with the Pro trim with all the basics plus niceties such as a hitch guidance camera view, LED headlights, and a 7.0-inch center touchscreen with wired smartphone compatibility. However, if this truck will double as your daily driver, you can make it as nice as your budget allows, to the point where utilitarianism disappears entirely (think 2500HD Ultimate Denali model), while utility remains.

If you foresee tough work for your next truck, go the no-worry route with a Sierra HD. Then, visit Sharp Automotive and test drive the several GMC Sierra HD trucks we have in our inventory.
