Why the Toyota Sienna Is the Three-Row Vehicle You’ve Been Looking For

July 20th, 2025 by

Minivans are easily the best family vehicles around. They can hold a ton of people and all their stuff, offer better fuel economy than SUVs, don’t sit as high up (so kids of all ages are able to get in and out more easily), and offer the straight-line performance of SUVs. The Toyota Sienna is one of the last great minivans that offers families a quality vehicle with great features and technology without charging an arm and a leg.

Pricing and Performance

The 2025 Toyota minivan starts from $40,635 and is offered exclusively with a hybrid 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 245 total horsepower. You can spec the minivan in either front- or all-wheel drive, which then adds a third motor to control the rear wheels. In the hands of Car and Driver, a Sienna Limited was able to get from 0-60 mph in just 7.5 seconds and run through the quarter mile in 15.8 seconds at 88 mph. While that’s not speed demon times, it is similar to a 2025 Highlander that does the same deed in 7.2 seconds and 15.5 seconds at 92 mph—while returning better miles per gallon. The Sienna is also faster than its main rivals from Kia and Chrysler. Additionally, the Sienna has more interior volume.

Fuel Economy Compared to an SUV

The EPA estimates that all-wheel drive (AWD) Sienna owners will see 35 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, with 35 mpg averaged between both driving cycles. The front-wheel drive (FWD) model gets 36 mpg across the board. The same Highlander as mentioned above achieves an EPA estimated 21 (city) and 28 (highway), with 24 mpg combined. The Sienna is certainly aided by its drag coefficient of just 0.28, where most SUVs are in the 0.32-0.36 range. The Sienna still has 6.3 inches of ground clearance in all trims except for the Woodland, which has 6.9 inches of clearance.

Modern Features

While minivans aren’t talked about as often as SUVs, they offer the same level of luxury and technology. Base models have an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while a 12.3-inch is optional. All models come standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, plus a WiFi hotspot and a free three-month subscription to SiriusXM. You can even opt for an 11.6-inch rear entertainment display to keep the minions occupied on longer drives.

Cargo Space that Crushes most SUVs

Whether you are a family of three or six, you run out of room fast when piling everyone into the car for a trip or extracurricular activities. Behind the third row of seats you will find 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 75.2 when those seats are folded flat. With the second row also stowed, cargo space increases to 101.0 cubic feet, with a total of 159.7 cubic feet of passenger volume (when equipped with a moonroof). To put that into perspective, the Chevrolet Traverse, a popular three-row crossover SUV, has 22.9 cubic feet of space behind its third row that increases to 56.6 when those seats are folded, and then a total of 97.6 cubes when all seats are folded. The Sienna is also nearly $2,000 cheaper (base versus base).

A New Vacuum and a Mini Fridge for 2025

Standard on the Platinum and available on Limited trim levels are a vacuum and FridgeBox. The FridgeBox allows you to keep drinks cool for any event, and the vacuum… well, that’s for the snacks that the kids swear they didn’t drop everywhere.

As Safe as Safe Can Be

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the 2025 Sienna as a Top Safety Pick, meaning it is one of the safest vehicles on the market. With standard safety features from Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0) that include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist, and a total of 10 airbags, it’s no wonder that the Sienna aced its crash testing by the IIHS.
